Plasterer and Renderer in Waterloo
Substantial period property a street back from the beach, and what the estuary does to it.
Big Victorian and Edwardian frontages
Waterloo has some of the most substantial period housing on this stretch of coast. The streets running back from the marine gardens and Crosby Road are wide, the plots are generous, and the houses have the deep bays, canopies, corbels and porches that go with money at the turn of the last century.
All of that shape is why a render job here costs more than the same square metre on a flat elevation. Every bay return, every canopy underside and every corbel has to be beaded and cut in by hand. That is accounted for in the written estimate rather than discovered once the scaffold is up.
The estuary is right there
A house in Waterloo is a few hundred yards from open water, and the elevations facing it take wind-driven rain with real pressure behind it rather than rain that simply falls. Those are the walls where a finish fails first, and they are almost always the ones customers describe as damp inside.
Water-repellent and vapour-open is the combination that works: it sheds the rain arriving at the face and still lets the wall dry outwards. That is the whole argument for silicone over a traditional cement finish on a coastal elevation, and it is the same argument we make on the Southport front.
Inside, the detail is worth keeping
The interiors match the outsides. Deep run cornice, ceiling roses, panelled ceiling fields, moulded stair strings, and in a lot of cases all of it painted over so many times the detail has gone soft.
Original cornice is nearly always worth saving. It is hand work rather than a fast job, but it is the reason those rooms look the way they do, and losing it under three millimetres of fresh skim is not a repair, it is damage. Where a section is genuinely gone, taken out for a stairwell or destroyed by a leak, new work has to match what survives elsewhere in the house.

Questions from Waterloo customers
Do you come out to Waterloo?
Yes. It is about twelve miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, a straight run down the coast road through Formby and Crosby. We are a Southport business that travels to Waterloo rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
Will rendering a period house lose its detail?
Only if it is done without thinking about it. Cills, plinths, string courses and arches can all be kept and picked out. What loses them is rendering everything in one flat colour and letting the mouldings vanish.
Can you match an existing cornice?
Where enough of it survives to take a profile from, yes. Off-the-shelf profiles rarely sit next to Victorian and Edwardian originals closely enough, so matching means working from what is on the wall rather than from a catalogue.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.

Anthony's just finished skimming the lounge. He prepared it all thoroughly and was so conscientious throughout. He arrived punctual in the mornings and never stopped until it was finished. He's done a brilliant job the room looks immaculate. He left it so clean and tidy afterwards. We would recommend him to anyone.
Anthony has done a fantastic job on our rendering. Excellent communication from start to finish and has always been responsive. He has turned up every day early and has left the place spotless. Couldn't fault the service and would use again and recommend to others. Thank you so much.
Anthony rendered the gable wall and single storey kitchen of my house. He did an excellent job of the work. Anthony fully explained the process and where he was up to as it progressed. He made sure that surrounding area and walls were protected from any debris or render during the process and did an excellent job of cleaning up both as it progressed and at the end. Anthony was also a pleasure to deal with as a tradesman. In addition his price was really competitive compared to other renderers who quoted. When I get the rest of the house re-rendered I will certainly be using Birkdale Plastering and Rendering.
