Detached, on plots with room round them
Aughton is mostly detached, from inter-war through to modern, on plots generous enough that every elevation is visible from somewhere. That changes the job. On a semi you render a front. Here you are usually looking at four elevations and a scaffold that has to go all the way round.
It also changes what the work is for. Very little of what we are asked to do here is repairing a failure. Most of it is a house that is sound and looks its age, where the point of the job is how it reads from the drive.
Brick left on, deliberately
On a large detached house, rendering the whole thing top to bottom often flattens it. The better answer is usually a split: render the upper storey and the gable, leave the brick on the ground floor, the bay and the porch, and let the two materials do different jobs.
That only works if the line between them is right. It stops on a bead, dead straight, with the brick clean up to it. Get that line wrong and it is the only thing anybody looks at.
The older village stock is a different question
Around the church and the older lanes there is genuinely old property, and the rules change completely. Solid walls, sometimes lime, and a finish that has to let the wall dry outwards.
Inside that stock there is often original cornice and ceiling detail worth keeping. It gets worked up to cleanly rather than buried under a skim, because losing an original moulding under three millimetres of finish is not a repair, it is damage.
Aughton also has a fair number of houses that have grown, with extensions and garden rooms added in different decades and different bricks. Rendering an elevation is the usual way to stop those junctions showing, and on a house of this size the decision is normally which elevations rather than whether.

Do you come out to Aughton?
Yes. It is about eight miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, over the moss through Ormskirk. We are a Southport business that travels to Aughton rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
Should I render the whole house or part of it?
On a large detached, usually part. Rendering everything flattens a house that has shape in it. Keeping the brick on the ground floor, the bay and the porch gives the front depth and keeps the material it was built from.
Will a rendered house need repainting?
Not a through-colour one. The colour is in the top coat rather than on it, so there is no paint film to fail. It wants the gutters kept clear and a wash down every few years.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.
