Combed scratch coat over stripped original brickwork on a period house

Plasterer and Renderer in Walton

Dense Victorian terrace around County Road, and what a solid wall will and will not take.

Terrace built shoulder to shoulder

The streets running off County Road and around the two grounds are dense Victorian and Edwardian terrace: bay fronted, two up two down or a little bigger, built solid with no cavity and packed tight enough that most houses have only one exposed elevation.

That density is an advantage. A mid terrace has one face taking weather instead of four, so the front is usually the only elevation that has ever needed anything doing to it, and access is off a pavement rather than a garden.

Solid walls want a breathable finish

On a solid wall there is nothing between the outside face and your inside plaster but brick. Everything the outside face lets in has to come back out through the same wall, and if it cannot, it comes out through the plaster instead.

That rules out a hard cement render, which is exactly what a lot of these fronts were given in the seventies and eighties and exactly why so much of it is now blown. Where render is the right answer here it has to be a breathable one: basecoat with mesh, primer, and a vapour-open top coat that sheds water at the face and still lets the wall dry.

Inside, more original than people expect

Walton terraces kept more cornice and more ceiling detail than their reputation suggests. It is smaller in scale than the villas up the coast, run rather than cast, and often several coats of paint away from being visible.

Where a chimney breast has come out, the making good is usually the giveaway, a flat patch on a wall that is not flat. That is worth doing properly rather than filling, because it is the first thing the eye finds in a room with a bare wall.

The other constant on Walton terraces is the back. Rear elevations and outriggers on streets like these are usually in far worse condition than the fronts, because nobody has been looking at them and the yard access makes them awkward to work on. They are often where the damp in a back bedroom is actually coming from.

Questions from Walton customers

Do you come out to Walton?

Yes. It is about fifteen miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, down the A565 and through Bootle. We are a Southport business that travels to Walton rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.

Can I render just the front of a terrace?

Yes, and on a mid terrace it is often the only elevation that needs it. The finish stops on a bead at the party line so it reads as a straight deliberate edge rather than as a job that ran out.

My front has blown render on it. Does all of it come off?

Only what has failed. Anything hollow, cracked through or lifting comes off; anything sound and well keyed can stay and be worked over. Tapping the elevation is how that gets decided, which is why we do not price this kind of job over the phone.

Do you charge to come and look?

No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.

Anthony rendered the gable wall and single storey kitchen of my house. He did an excellent job of the work. Anthony fully explained the process and where he was up to as it progressed. He made sure that surrounding area and walls were protected from any debris or render during the process and did an excellent job of cleaning up both as it progressed and at the end. Anthony was also a pleasure to deal with as a tradesman. In addition his price was really competitive compared to other renderers who quoted. When I get the rest of the house re-rendered I will certainly be using Birkdale Plastering and Rendering.
