Preston divides fairly cleanly. The streets around Deepdale, Plungington and Ashton are dense Victorian and Edwardian terrace built solid. Fulwood, Ingol and the roads out towards them are inter-war and post-war semis with cavities.
Which of the two you are in decides everything about a render specification, and it is the first thing we establish. A breathable system is not optional on the terrace stock and it is simply one option among several on the suburban stock.
Frost rather than salt
This far inland the weather problem changes. There is far less salt than we deal with on the Sefton coast, and considerably more frost. Frost is harder on a finish that is already holding water, because water expands as it freezes and pushes the coat off from behind.
It also shortens the working year. We will not put a top coat on with frost or driving rain forecast. A finish that freezes or gets rained on before it has cured will craze or bloom, and no amount of goodwill afterwards fixes it. Winter start dates need more flexibility here than they do on the coast.
Period interiors worth the hand work
Preston kept a lot of its Victorian and Edwardian interiors: run cornice, ceiling roses, panelled fields and moulded stair strings, most of it painted over enough times that the detail has gone soft.
Restoring it is hand work and it is slower than skimming a flat ceiling, but it is the reason those rooms look the way they do. Where a section has genuinely gone, new work has to match what survives elsewhere in the room rather than being close enough.
Preston terrace fronts also tend to sit straight onto the pavement, which means a scaffold licence in most cases and a set-up that has to keep a footway open. That is a lead time rather than a difficulty, and it is worth starting early rather than the week before.

Do you come out to Preston?
Yes. It is about twenty-one miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, up the A565 and across through Tarleton. We are a Southport business that travels to Preston rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
Preston is a fair way from Southport. Is that a problem?
It is honest to say it is a distance. We plan Preston work as full days on site rather than dropping in between local jobs, and the estimate says what the job costs before anything starts. If a small repair is all you need, a local firm will serve you better and we will say so.
What time of year can rendering be done?
Most of the year, but not in front of frost or driving rain. Inland the frost window is wider than it is on the coast, so winter dates here need more flexibility.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.
