Plasterers and Renderers in Crosby
The far end of what we cover — a straight run down the coast, and some of the hardest-worked walls on it.
Solid brick, bay fronts, and a lot of original plaster
Crosby, Waterloo and Blundellsands are dominated by Victorian and Edwardian property — bay-fronted terraces, tall semis and some very substantial detached houses near the front. Most of it is solid brick with no cavity, and that single fact decides what can go on the outside. A solid wall is meant to take up some water and give it back; a hard cement render stops the giving-back half, and the wall simply stays wet behind it.
Inside, the ceiling heights are generous and a lot of the original lath and plaster is still up there, along with cornice, roses and moulded stair strings. Where a ceiling has begun to bow away from the laths it is usually past patching and better overboarded and skimmed. The cornice is nearly always worth saving — it is hand work, but it is the reason those rooms look the way they do.
Weather off the mouth of the estuary
The streets behind Crosby beach sit on a much narrower strip of dune than Ainsdale or Formby, so there is far less between the houses and the water. What comes off the mouth of the Mersey is wet, constant and full of salt, and salt is what does the quiet damage: it soaks into porous brick and old render, holds damp in the wall, then crystallises as it dries and pushes the finish off from behind.
The result is elevations that age at completely different rates on the same house. A seaward gable can be blown and drummy while the sheltered side is perfectly sound. That is normal here, and it is why we tap a whole elevation before pricing anything rather than quoting off a photograph of the bad patch.
We travel to Crosby — we are not from it
We work from Sheepfold Close in Southport, and Crosby is roughly twelve miles down the coast through Formby and Ince Blundell. We are not going to dress that up as being local: we are a Southport firm that covers this coast, and Crosby work is planned as full days on site rather than something squeezed in between two jobs nearer home.
The practical end of that is access. A lot of the terraced and semi-detached frontages here are narrow, close to the pavement and tight for scaffold, and some of the older streets are permit parking. We would far rather sort that out at estimate stage than turn up on the first morning and find there is nowhere to stand a tower.

Only the seaward gable has failed. Can we just do that one wall?
Sometimes, yes. The two catches are that new render next to weathered render will not match, and that if the gable went because of what is underneath rather than the weather, the other elevations are on the same clock. We will tell you which of the two we think it is.
Our house is a solid-wall Victorian terrace. Can it be rendered at all?
Yes, with a breathable system that lets the wall dry outwards. It is hard sand-and-cement on solid walls that has blown on so much of the older stock along this coast, not rendering as such.
You are in Southport. Do you actually come out to Crosby?
Yes. It is about twelve miles down the coast and we plan Crosby work as full days on site rather than dropping in between local jobs. We will not pretend to be a Crosby firm — we are a Southport one that covers this coast — and what the job costs is in the written estimate before anything starts.
Can I see work you have done near Crosby?
The gallery on this site is all our own work across Southport and the coast, grouped by service. If you want to see something specific — a silicone render, a media wall, a restored ceiling — ask when you call and we will point you at the relevant photos.

Anthony's just finished skimming the lounge. He prepared it all thoroughly and was so conscientious throughout. He arrived punctual in the mornings and never stopped until it was finished. He's done a brilliant job the room looks immaculate. He left it so clean and tidy afterwards. We would recommend him to anyone.
Anthony has done a fantastic job on our rendering. Excellent communication from start to finish and has always been responsive. He has turned up every day early and has left the place spotless. Couldn't fault the service and would use again and recommend to others. Thank you so much.
Anthony rendered the gable wall and single storey kitchen of my house. He did an excellent job of the work. Anthony fully explained the process and where he was up to as it progressed. He made sure that surrounding area and walls were protected from any debris or render during the process and did an excellent job of cleaning up both as it progressed and at the end. Anthony was also a pleasure to deal with as a tradesman. In addition his price was really competitive compared to other renderers who quoted. When I get the rest of the house re-rendered I will certainly be using Birkdale Plastering and Rendering.
I recently had the front of my house rendered by birkdale plastering and rendering, and couldn't be happier with the results. From start to finish Anthony was professional, friendly and highly skilled. The quality of the rendering is outstanding, giving my home a fresh, modern look. Anthony paid great attention to detail, kept everything tidy and completed the job on time. If you're looking for expert rendering services I highly recommend birkdale plastering and rendering.
