Cavity walls, and what that opens up
Maghull is almost all post-war. The town grew from a village into a town between the nineteen fifties and the nineteen eighties, so the overwhelming majority of the housing is cavity-walled semis, detached and bungalows from that period, with the older core around Church Lane and the canal being the exception rather than the rule.
A cavity changes the whole conversation about render. On a solid wall the finish has to breathe, because anything that traps moisture in the masonry turns a dry wall into a damp one. On a cavity wall the outer leaf can get wet without the inside going damp, so silicone thin-coat, monocouche and traditional systems are all genuinely on the table. The decision comes down to the look, the state of the existing surface and the budget, instead of being forced by the construction.
Pebbledash and painted render, which is most of what we are asked about
The stock that went up here in the sixties and seventies was very often dashed or rendered and then painted, and both have now reached the end of what they were going to do. Painted render is the more common problem: it gets patched, then repainted, then patched again, and each coat traps a bit more of what is behind it until the whole face is hollow in places.
Sound dash can sometimes be overclad, which saves the mess and the cost of taking it off. Hollow, cracked or lifting dash has to come off first, and it makes a serious amount of debris. Which of the two you are looking at is settled by tapping the elevation rather than by looking at it, which is why we do not price render over the phone.
Bungalows, and why they cost less to render
There are a lot of bungalows in Maghull, and that takes a real cost out of a re-render. Most of a bungalow elevation can be worked off towers rather than a full scaffold, and there is usually somewhere on the plot to put a mixing station without blocking anybody. It is worth knowing before you assume the job is out of reach on price.
Bungalow elevations are also long and low, which is unforgiving of a mid-tone colour. A grey or a buff shows any unevenness in the coat below it where a white would wash it out, so on a coloured job the work goes into ruling the basecoat flat rather than into the top coat.
Inside: knock-throughs, loft rooms and media walls
Because the exteriors here are mostly sound, a good deal of the Maghull work is internal. Boarding and skimming after a knock-through, garages finished off as rooms, loft conversions plastered out, and media walls in through lounges are the four we are asked for most.
Houses of this age move a little, and modern rooms are lit with a lot of downlights, which is a hard combination. Downlights rake across a wall and show up anything that is only nearly flat, and a joint that was not scrim taped will come back through the paint as a line within a year. Taped joints and beaded angles are the difference, and they are the stage that is easiest to skip.

Do you come out as far as Maghull?
Yes, regularly. It is about nine miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, straight down the A59 or through Lydiate. We are a Southport business that travels to Maghull rather than a local one, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.
Can I see work you have done near Maghull?

Is my house a cavity wall or a solid wall?
In Maghull it is almost certainly a cavity, because nearly all of the town is post-war. The older property around Church Lane and the canal is the exception. It matters because a solid wall needs a breathable finish and a cavity wall does not.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.
