Plasterer and Renderer in Penwortham
Suburban stock over the Ribble, almost all of it cavity walled, and mostly internal work.
Suburban, and almost entirely cavity
Penwortham grew as Preston's suburb across the Ribble, mostly between the wars and after them, and it is semis and detached houses rather than terrace. Nearly all of it has a cavity.
That means the render conversation is genuinely open. Silicone thin-coat, monocouche and traditional systems are all realistic, and the decision comes down to the look you want, the state of what is on there now and the budget, rather than being forced by the construction.
Pebbledash and painted render, again
The inter-war stock here was dashed the way inter-war stock was dashed everywhere, and much of it has been painted since. Painted render is the worse of the two: each coat holds a little more water against a finish that has already started to let go, and the patching shows.
Sound dash can sometimes be overclad. Hollow or lifting dash comes off first. Tapping the elevation settles it in ten minutes and looking at it settles nothing, which is why the estimate follows a visit.

Mostly internal work, in practice
Because the exteriors here are largely sound, most of what we actually do in Penwortham is inside: boarding and skimming after a knock-through, ceilings, loft rooms finished off, media walls and garages converted.
Modern rooms are lit with a lot of downlights, which is unforgiving. A wall that is only nearly flat is obvious at night, and that is worth knowing before choosing between a skim over what is there and boarding it out properly.
The garages are worth a mention on their own. A great many Penwortham houses of this period have an attached or integral garage that has stopped being used as one, and converting it is the cheapest room anybody is going to add to a house. The plastering side of that is a rendered elevation outside and an insulated lining inside.
It wants insulating properly rather than just lining. A garage wall was never built to be a room wall, and a cold surface is where condensation shows up first.

Questions from Penwortham customers
Do you come out to Penwortham?
Yes. It is about twenty miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, up through Tarleton and over the Ribble. We are a Southport business that travels to Penwortham rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
Do you cover this far north?
Yes, planned as full days on site rather than dropping in. We are a Southport business travelling to Penwortham, not a local one, and the written estimate says what the job costs before anything starts.
Can you plaster while we are living in the house?
Usually yes. A room or a floor at a time, sheeted up, with everything cleared down at the end of each day rather than at the end of the week.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.

Anthony's just finished skimming the lounge. He prepared it all thoroughly and was so conscientious throughout. He arrived punctual in the mornings and never stopped until it was finished. He's done a brilliant job the room looks immaculate. He left it so clean and tidy afterwards. We would recommend him to anyone.
Anthony has done a fantastic job on our rendering. Excellent communication from start to finish and has always been responsive. He has turned up every day early and has left the place spotless. Couldn't fault the service and would use again and recommend to others. Thank you so much.
Anthony rendered the gable wall and single storey kitchen of my house. He did an excellent job of the work. Anthony fully explained the process and where he was up to as it progressed. He made sure that surrounding area and walls were protected from any debris or render during the process and did an excellent job of cleaning up both as it progressed and at the end. Anthony was also a pleasure to deal with as a tradesman. In addition his price was really competitive compared to other renderers who quoted. When I get the rest of the house re-rendered I will certainly be using Birkdale Plastering and Rendering.
