Render with Band Detail in Southport
Southport. An Edwardian end terrace rendered white front and flank, with the plinth, the cills, the string course and the door arch picked out in dark grey.
What the customer wanted
An end terrace in Southport, Edwardian, with a canted bay, a tiled canopy over it and an arched front door recess. The render on it was tired and the detail had been painted over so many times it had gone soft.
What they did not want was for the house to end up as a plain white block, which is what happens when a period frontage is rendered in one colour and every moulding disappears into it.
What we did
White through-colour silicone across the front and round the flank, over a basecoat with mesh and a primer, as every render here is built up.
Then the detail bands: the plinth course, the window cills, the string course under the bay canopy and the arch over the door, all picked out in a dark grey against the white. The bands follow the lines the house already had rather than being invented, which is why they look like they belong.
The flank wall was rendered as well rather than stopping at the corner. On an end terrace that elevation takes the weather from the side, and it is the one people see first from the cross street.
The finish
A white frontage with its own detail still legible, and a flank elevation that matches it. The pebbledashed neighbour in the photographs is a fair comparison for what the whole row looked like before.
One thing worth saying about this job: it was photographed at the end rather than at the start. There is no before shot of this one, so what is on this page is the finished house from three angles and not a comparison.
The system is on silicone rendering, and period detail generally on decorative plasterwork. This job was in Southport.
The bands are the whole point
Take the dark bands off this house and it is a white box. With them it still reads as the Edwardian terrace it is, because the bands land exactly where the original detail already was: the plinth at the bottom, the cills, the string course under the bay canopy and the arch over the door.
That only works if the render underneath is straight. A band drawn along a wavy line is worse than no band at all, so the run of every one of those edges is set out before anything is picked out.

Round the corner as well
An end terrace has a flank wall, and a flank wall is the elevation that takes the weather. Carrying the render round it rather than stopping at the corner is what keeps the house looking finished from the side street, and it is the elevation that benefits most from a water-repellent top coat.
The original brick boundary wall was left exactly as it was.

Questions people ask about this
Can render keep the detail on a period house?
Yes, if it is set out to. Cills, plinths, string courses and arches can all be kept and picked out. What loses them is rendering everything in one colour and letting the mouldings vanish into it.
Do the bands need repainting?
The white is through-colour so it does not. The bands are a paint finish on top of the render, so they will want going over eventually, in the same way any painted detail does.
Should the flank wall be rendered too?
On an end terrace, usually yes. It is the elevation that takes the weather from the side and the one visible from the cross street, and stopping at the corner looks like the job ran out.

Anthony's just finished skimming the lounge. He prepared it all thoroughly and was so conscientious throughout. He arrived punctual in the mornings and never stopped until it was finished. He's done a brilliant job the room looks immaculate. He left it so clean and tidy afterwards. We would recommend him to anyone.
Anthony has done a fantastic job on our rendering. Excellent communication from start to finish and has always been responsive. He has turned up every day early and has left the place spotless. Couldn't fault the service and would use again and recommend to others. Thank you so much.
Anthony rendered the gable wall and single storey kitchen of my house. He did an excellent job of the work. Anthony fully explained the process and where he was up to as it progressed. He made sure that surrounding area and walls were protected from any debris or render during the process and did an excellent job of cleaning up both as it progressed and at the end. Anthony was also a pleasure to deal with as a tradesman. In addition his price was really competitive compared to other renderers who quoted. When I get the rest of the house re-rendered I will certainly be using Birkdale Plastering and Rendering.
