Plasterer and Renderer in Burscough
Canal-side brick, converted farm buildings, and modern estates that want nothing of the sort.
Old brick along the canal
The older part of Burscough is soft handmade brick along the Leeds and Liverpool, cottages and workers' housing and a good number of buildings that started agricultural. Brick of that age is porous and was built to get wet and dry out again.
That rules out the obvious answer. Sealing soft old brick under a hard cement render turns a wall that has coped for two hundred years into a damp one, because the water still gets in at the head and the joints and then has nowhere to go. Where render is right on a building like this it has to be a breathable one, and often lime is the honest answer rather than anything modern.

Converted agricultural buildings
There is a lot of converted farm building around Burscough, and it produces walls made of more than one thing: original brick meeting blockwork, a rebuilt section that never matched, an opening filled in decades ago.
Those are interesting jobs and they are slow ones. Every different material takes suction at a different rate, which is exactly the situation a primer is for, and the substrate has to be assessed honestly before anything is priced rather than after the scaffold is up.

The modern estates want the opposite
The newer housing on the edges of the village is conventional cavity brick and block, and nothing above applies to it. Silicone thin-coat, monocouche and traditional systems are all realistic, and most of what we do on it is internal: skimming after alterations, media walls, loft rooms and garages finished off.
Newer houses also settle in their first years, so taped joints and beaded angles matter more than they look like they should. Skipping them is why so many newer houses crack in the same predictable lines.
The other thing about the newer edges of Burscough is that they are still growing. A good share of what we do there is finishing off work somebody else has built: an extension shell boarded and skimmed, a garage lined out, a knock-through made good. That is straightforward work as long as the drying time is in the plan.

Questions from Burscough customers
Do you come out to Burscough?
Yes. It is about ten miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, over the moss through Ormskirk. We are a Southport business that travels to Burscough rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
Should an old brick cottage be rendered at all?
Often the honest answer is no, or only where a wall is genuinely past repointing. Where it is the right call, the finish has to be breathable. A cement render on soft handmade brick causes far more damp than it ever cures.
Do you work on converted barns and outbuildings?
Yes, and they are usually the most interesting walls we see. They are also slow, because the elevation is rarely one material and each one behaves differently, so the price has to come after a proper look.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.

Anthony's just finished skimming the lounge. He prepared it all thoroughly and was so conscientious throughout. He arrived punctual in the mornings and never stopped until it was finished. He's done a brilliant job the room looks immaculate. He left it so clean and tidy afterwards. We would recommend him to anyone.
Anthony has done a fantastic job on our rendering. Excellent communication from start to finish and has always been responsive. He has turned up every day early and has left the place spotless. Couldn't fault the service and would use again and recommend to others. Thank you so much.
Anthony rendered the gable wall and single storey kitchen of my house. He did an excellent job of the work. Anthony fully explained the process and where he was up to as it progressed. He made sure that surrounding area and walls were protected from any debris or render during the process and did an excellent job of cleaning up both as it progressed and at the end. Anthony was also a pleasure to deal with as a tradesman. In addition his price was really competitive compared to other renderers who quoted. When I get the rest of the house re-rendered I will certainly be using Birkdale Plastering and Rendering.
