Two different sorts of wall in one town
Litherland is split, and it matters more than it sounds. The older streets near the canal and Hawthorne Road are solid-wall terrace. The estates that went up between the wars and after it are cavity.
On a solid wall the finish has to breathe or the wall dries inwards through your plaster. On a cavity wall the outer leaf can get wet without the inside going damp, and silicone, monocouche and traditional systems are all realistic. Getting this wrong is the single most expensive mistake on a render job, so it is the first thing we establish rather than the last.
Pebbledash, and getting rid of it
A large amount of the inter-war stock here was dashed, and it is the single most common thing we are asked to remove. It has usually been painted at least once as well, which makes it worse: the paint film holds water against a finish that has already started to let go.
The transformation is the most dramatic thing we do. A dashed semi that has looked dated for forty years reads as a completely different house once it is in a clean modern render, and it is normally the cheapest way to change how a house looks from the pavement.
Inside: making good after everything else
A good share of the internal work here is making good rather than whole rooms. Patch repairs, single walls, ceilings after a leak, and putting things right after a rewire or a new bathroom.
We would rather do a small job properly than turn it away. The thing that decides whether a patch disappears is not the skim, it is how the edges are worked into what is already there, and that is not a five minute job however small the patch is.

Do you come out to Litherland?
Yes. It is about eleven miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, down the A565 through Crosby. We are a Southport business that travels to Litherland rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
How do I know if my wall is solid or cavity?
The age of the house is the quickest guide: pre-1920 round here is usually solid, inter-war and later usually cavity. A window reveal gives it away too. If the wall looks much thicker than a brick and a half at the opening, it is likely solid.
Is it worth rendering over pebbledash or taking it off?
Depends entirely on whether the dash is still stuck on. Sound dash can be overclad. Hollow or lifting dash comes off, and it makes a lot of mess. Tapping the wall answers it in ten minutes.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.
