A village that grew, in two clear halves
Lydiate is older property strung along Southport Road and the canal, with post-war and modern estate housing filling in behind it. The two halves want completely different things.
The estate stock is cavity walled and straightforward: the choice of render system is open, and most of what needs doing is a finish that has reached its age. The older property along the canal is solid walled, sometimes with lime in it, and needs a breathable finish or it will hold water in the wall instead of shedding it.
Open ground either side
Between the two, and all around Lydiate, is farmland. A house on the edge of an estate here can have a mile of open field in front of it, and wind-driven rain arriving across open ground hits an elevation with pressure rather than simply running down it.
It is the same problem we deal with out at Banks on the other side of the moss. The answer is not a thicker coat, it is the right one: mesh in the basecoat, a primer that evens the suction, and a top coat that is water-repellent and vapour-open.
Converted outbuildings and extensions
A fair share of the work out here is on buildings that started as something else, or houses that have grown. Old outbuildings tied into new extensions, garages converted, and walls made of more than one material meeting on the same elevation.
That is exactly where a render earns its place, because it puts one finish over brickwork of three different ages and the junctions stop showing. What it must not be on the old part is a hard cement coat over soft brick.
Access out here is usually the easy part. Most Lydiate plots have room for a mixing station and a skip without blocking a road, and a lot of the estate housing is low enough to work off towers rather than a full scaffold. That takes genuine cost out of a job and it is worth knowing before you assume a re-render is out of reach.

Do you come out to Lydiate?
Yes. It is about eight miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, straight down the A567 through Maghull. We are a Southport business that travels to Lydiate rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
My house is part old and part extension. Can render tie them together?
That is one of the things render is genuinely good at. It puts one finish across brickwork of different ages so the junction stops existing. The only caution is the old half: if it is solid walled it needs a breathable system, not a cement one.
Does an exposed elevation need something different?
Not a different product, a properly built up one. Mesh bedded into the basecoat, primer to even the suction, and a water-repellent top coat that still lets the wall breathe. Skipping the mesh is what fails first on an exposed wall.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.
