Narrow streets change how a job runs
Anfield is terrace, tightly packed, on streets where there is often nowhere obvious to put a skip or a mixing station. That is a practical matter rather than a technical one, but it is the thing that decides whether a job runs smoothly, and it is worth settling before the first day rather than on it.
Scaffold on a terrace front usually goes up off the pavement, which brings a licence with it in most cases. We would rather raise that early than have it appear as a surprise.
What went wrong with the render that is on there now
A great deal of the render on Anfield fronts is sand and cement, put on over solid brick, often decades ago and often over a wall that was already damp. Cement on soft brick seals the face. The water in the wall then has one way out, which is inwards, and the render eventually lets go in sheets.
It is not a small repair when it goes. What is hollow comes off, the substrate gets assessed honestly, and the new system is built up breathable. Putting a new coat over a failing one buys about three winters and then takes the new work with it, so the second job costs more than doing it properly the first time would have.
Inside: ceilings, damp patches and making good
The internal work here is mostly repair. Ceilings after a leak, walls made good after damp has been dealt with, patches where a fire or a boiler has come out, and rooms skimmed out before a sale or a let.
One thing worth saying plainly: plastering over a wall that is still wet does not fix damp, it hides it until the new plaster fails too. The cause has to be dealt with first, and if it has not been, we will say so rather than take the work.

Do you come out to Anfield?
Yes. It is about sixteen miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, down the A59 or the A565. We are a Southport business that travels to Anfield rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
Will plastering fix my damp wall?
No. Plaster over a wet wall hides the problem until the new plaster fails as well. Whatever is letting water in has to be dealt with first. If it has not been, we will say so rather than take the job.
Why has my render come off in sheets?
Usually because it is a hard cement render on a solid wall. It seals the face, the water in the wall cannot get out through it, and eventually the bond lets go across a whole area at once rather than cracking gently.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.
