Housing that followed the works
Leyland grew around the motor works, and the housing followed it in waves: inter-war terraces and semis built for the workforce, a large post-war expansion behind them, and substantial modern estates since.
Almost all of it has a cavity, which keeps the options open, and almost all of it is the same handful of house types repeated. That is useful. Once you have worked out what one elevation on a street wants, the rest of the street usually wants the same.
Renders that have reached their age
The inter-war and post-war stock was very largely dashed or rendered from new, and those finishes are now somewhere between sixty and ninety years old. Most of what we are asked to look at is a coat that has simply come to the end rather than one that was ever wrong.
Where it is worn but sound, an overclad works and saves the mess of removal. Where it is hollow, cracked through or lifting it comes off, and it makes a serious amount of debris that gets contained and taken away.
Inland weather, and what that means for dates
Leyland is well inland and gets less salt and more frost than anywhere on our own coast. Frost is hard on a finish that is holding water, because the water expands as it freezes and pushes the coat off from behind.
Practically that means the working year is a little shorter. We do not put a top coat on with frost or driving rain forecast, so a winter external job here needs more flexibility on dates than the same job in April.
Inside, the work here is much the same as anywhere on stock of this age: whole rooms skimmed, ceilings after a leak, artex over-skimmed and making good after a rewire. Artex from before the 2000s can contain asbestos, so it does not get sanded or scraped. It is skimmed over, or tested first if there is any doubt.

Do you come out to Leyland?
Yes. It is about eighteen miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, up through Tarleton and Croston. We are a Southport business that travels to Leyland rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
Is it cheaper if my neighbours have theirs done at the same time?
Often, yes, because the scaffold and the set-up are shared. On a street of identical houses it is worth asking, and it is worth asking us to price it as one job rather than as separate ones.
Will you travel this far for a small job?
For a small internal repair, honestly, a local firm will serve you better and we will say so. For a full elevation or a whole house it is a straightforward run and it is planned as full days on site.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.
