Almost nothing here predates the fifties
Kirkby was a village until the nineteen fifties and then became a new town in barely a decade. That gives it a housing stock unlike anywhere else we cover: overwhelmingly post-war, cavity walled, built quickly and largely to the same handful of designs.
For a renderer that has one immediate consequence. Everything is the same age, so when the original render reaches the end of its life it does so across whole streets at once rather than house by house. A lot of what we are asked to look at here is a finish that is simply worn out rather than one that was ever wrong.
Non-traditional construction is worth checking for
Some of the fastest-built post-war stock in this part of the world is not conventional brick and block at all. There are system-built and part-prefabricated types around, and a render specification that is right for a cavity brick wall is not automatically right for a concrete panel one.
That is a look-before-quoting job rather than a phone call. Where a wall turns out not to be conventional we would rather say so and price it accordingly than find out halfway through.
Insulation is often the real reason people ask
A lot of Kirkby enquiries start as a render question and turn out to be a warmth question. Post-war cavity walls are often poorly filled or not filled at all, and a rendered insulation system over the outside deals with both at once: the wall gets warmer and the house gets a new finish.
It costs more than render on its own and it changes the depth at reveals and eaves, so it is a decision to make before anything is priced rather than an upgrade partway through.
Because so much of Kirkby was built to the same designs, a street tends to want the same answer. If two or three neighbours are thinking about it at once it is worth asking us to price it as one job. The scaffold and the set-up are the expensive part and they are shared.

Do you come out to Kirkby?
Yes. It is about thirteen miles from Liverpool Road in Southport, over the moss through Ormskirk. We are a Southport business that travels to Kirkby rather than a local one, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. The estimate is written down before anything starts and there is no separate travel charge on it.
Can render go over external wall insulation?
Yes, that is exactly what the system is: insulation boards fixed back, basecoat with mesh bedded into it, primer, then the top coat. It costs more than render alone and it adds thickness at the reveals, so it is decided before pricing.
How do I know if my house is standard construction?
Mostly by looking at it in the right places: the wall thickness at a window reveal, what is under the render at an edge, and the age and pattern of the estate. If there is any doubt we open up a small area rather than guess.
Do you charge to come and look?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it.
