Silicone Render in Maghull
Maghull. A bungalow taken off a tired painted finish and into a grey through-colour silicone render, stopped on a bell cast bead above the brick plinth.
What the customer wanted
A bungalow in Maghull with a tired painted finish that had been patched more than once and had started to look it. They wanted one colour across the whole thing, a grey rather than the usual white, and they wanted the brick plinth at the bottom left alone.
What was done
A grey through-colour silicone system, taken across the elevations and stopped on a bell cast bead above the brick plinth. The bell cast is the small detail that does the real work down there. It throws the render face proud of the wall below it so rain running down the elevation drips clear instead of tracking back onto the brick and the damp course. Without it you get a dirty grey streak along the top of the plinth within a couple of winters.
Grey is less forgiving than white on a long low elevation, because a mid tone shows any unevenness in the substrate that a white would flatten out. That means the basecoat has to be right rather than nearly right, with the mesh properly bedded and the coat ruled flat, before the top coat goes anywhere near it.
The finish
One continuous grey across the bungalow, the corner arris straight, and the brick plinth still doing its job at the bottom. Because it is through-colour, the grey is in the material rather than painted on it, so there is nothing to strip and repaint later.
Bungalow height also takes real cost out of a job. Most of an elevation like this can be reached off towers rather than a full scaffold, which is worth knowing before anyone assumes a re-render is out of reach.
The system and what drives the price are set out on the silicone rendering page, and stripping a failed finish first is on the external rendering page. This job was in Maghull.
Questions people ask about this
What is a bell cast bead for?
It kicks the bottom edge of the render out from the wall so water drips clear of the brickwork and the damp course underneath instead of running back onto it.
Is grey harder to get right than white?
On a long flat elevation, yes. A mid tone shows any unevenness in the coat below it, where a white tends to wash it out. The work goes into the basecoat rather than the top coat.
Do you need a full scaffold on a bungalow?
Usually not. Most of a bungalow elevation can be worked off towers, which takes a real cost out of the job compared with a two-storey house.

Anthony's just finished skimming the lounge. He prepared it all thoroughly and was so conscientious throughout. He arrived punctual in the mornings and never stopped until it was finished. He's done a brilliant job the room looks immaculate. He left it so clean and tidy afterwards. We would recommend him to anyone.
Anthony has done a fantastic job on our rendering. Excellent communication from start to finish and has always been responsive. He has turned up every day early and has left the place spotless. Couldn't fault the service and would use again and recommend to others. Thank you so much.
Anthony rendered the gable wall and single storey kitchen of my house. He did an excellent job of the work. Anthony fully explained the process and where he was up to as it progressed. He made sure that surrounding area and walls were protected from any debris or render during the process and did an excellent job of cleaning up both as it progressed and at the end. Anthony was also a pleasure to deal with as a tradesman. In addition his price was really competitive compared to other renderers who quoted. When I get the rest of the house re-rendered I will certainly be using Birkdale Plastering and Rendering.
