What the customer wanted
A bungalow in Southport with a new side extension on it. The extension was built and watertight, and it looked exactly like what it was: newer brick against older brick, with the join running straight down the front of the house.
They did not want the whole bungalow rendered. They wanted the new work to stop announcing itself.
What was there
Two ages of brick meeting on one elevation, which is the situation render is genuinely good at. New brick and mortar sit differently against weathered work no matter how close the match is, and on a low bungalow frontage the eye is level with the join.
The doorway and the windows sit in the middle of the rendered section, so the beads and the cut-ins are at eye height rather than up on a gable where nobody looks closely.
What we did
The middle section was rendered and the brick was deliberately left at both ends, so the finish reads as a panel rather than as a patch that ran out of money. Basecoat with mesh, openings masked, then a cream through-colour top coat.
Masking is not tidiness. A silicone top coat that gets onto a frame or a cill does not wipe off cleanly once it has grabbed, so the time goes on before the coat rather than after it.
A single elevation on a bungalow is a few days on site rather than weeks, and most of it can be worked off towers rather than a full scaffold, which takes real cost out.
The finish
One cream panel across the middle of the frontage, brick at both ends, and no join to look at. The photographs are the same viewpoint, so the only thing that changed between them is the top coat.

How soon can a new extension be rendered?
New masonry needs to dry out first, typically several weeks, and longer through winter. Rendering it too early traps the water that is still coming out of the blockwork.
Do you have to render the whole house?
No, and here we deliberately did not. Rendering the new section and leaving the brick at both ends makes the finish look like a decision. What does not work is a render that stops halfway across a wall for no visible reason.
Does the render need painting?
Not a through-colour one. The cream is in the top coat rather than on it, so there is no paint film to fail.
