Plastering and rendering in Southport
Birkdale Plastering and Rendering works across Southport and the Sefton coast on everything from a single skimmed ceiling to a full silicone render system on a solid-wall Victorian house. Inside: skimming, float and set, dry lining, decorative restoration and bespoke media walls. Outside: re-rendering, pebbledash removal and full silicone systems built up over insulation.
The coast is hard on buildings. Salt-laden wind off the Irish Sea gets into porous masonry and old sand-and-cement render, and the finishes that survive it are the ones that keep driving rain out while still letting the wall dry. Most of what we get called to strip off failed because that was ignored, so it is where we start.
Every job gets a free written estimate after a proper look at the walls, not a number over the phone. We are fully insured, we sheet and protect before we start, and we sweep and clear down every day rather than at the end of the week.

You deal with Anthony directly, start to finish — he is the one who comes out and looks at the walls, and he is the one who does the work. It is his name in nearly every review on our Google profile, and the same things come up in them: turns up when he says he will, explains what he is doing as he goes, and leaves the place clean.
There is no clever trick to a good finish. It is preparation, the right system for the wall in front of you, and not cutting the stages that do not show — the mesh in the basecoat, the primer, the scrim on every joint, the bead on every angle.
So we would rather tell you the awkward thing early. If render is drummy and needs hacking off, we will say so. If a wall needs floating rather than a quick skim, we will say that too, because a skim over a wall that is out of true looks fine for a fortnight and then shows every hollow. And if frost or driving rain is coming, we will move a top coat rather than watch it craze.
That is also why we quote in writing after seeing the job. It means the price accounts for the scaffold, the prep and the mess — and it means the number you agree is the number at the end.

Anthony rendered the gable wall and single storey kitchen of my house. He did an excellent job of the work. Anthony fully explained the process and where he was up to as it progressed. He made sure that surrounding area and walls were protected from any debris or render during the process and did an excellent job of cleaning up both as it progressed and at the end. Frequently asked questions
Do you charge for a quote?
No. Estimates are free and given in writing after we have come out and looked at the walls. We do not price rendering or plastering over the phone, because what a wall needs is decided by what is underneath it and you cannot tell that down a phone line.
Which areas do you cover?
Southport and the whole Sefton coast — Birkdale, Ainsdale, Formby, Churchtown, Hillside, Crosby and Banks — and inland to Ormskirk. We are based on Sheepfold Close in Southport, so most jobs are within a short drive.
Are you insured?
Yes, fully insured on every job, inside and out. It is on the van and it applies to everything from a single skimmed ceiling to a full scaffolded re-render.
How long does plaster take to dry before painting?
A skimmed room usually needs about four to seven days to dry evenly, longer in winter or on a floated wall. Wait until the colour is a consistent pale shade all over, then start with a watered-down mist coat. Painting too early is why fresh emulsion peels.
Can you work in winter?
Internal work, yes, all year. External rendering depends on the forecast rather than the month — we need it above about 5°C with no frost and a dry window for the top coat to cure, so winter start dates need more flexibility.
Do you clear up after yourselves?
Every day, not just at the end of the job. Floors and ground get sheeted before we start, waste is contained and taken away, and the site is swept down before we leave.
