Southport has some of the best surviving period interiors on this coast, and the plasterwork is a large part of why those rooms feel the way they do. Deep cornice, a moulded rose, a panelled ceiling field — it is what stops a high-ceilinged Victorian room feeling like a box.
Most of what we do here is restoration rather than replacement: getting a hundred and twenty years of paint out of the detail, repairing what has been damaged, and running in new sections where a chunk has gone missing.
Restoring what is already there
The most common problem with original plasterwork is not damage, it is paint. Decades of repainting fill the undercuts until a crisp moulding turns into a soft, rounded lump and the shadow lines that made it work disappear entirely.
Bringing that back is patient work, and it is done by hand. Once the profile is legible again, damaged sections are repaired, missing returns are run in, and the whole thing reads as one piece rather than an obvious patch.
Matching, running and replacing
Where a section is genuinely gone — taken out for a stairwell, lost when a wall came down, or destroyed by a leak — new work has to match what survives elsewhere in the room or in the house. That means taking the profile off the original rather than picking the nearest thing from a catalogue.
In a room where nothing original survives, the honest approach is a profile that suits the age and proportions of the house. A heavy Victorian cornice in a 1930s semi with eight-foot ceilings looks wrong, and no amount of quality in the fitting fixes a badly chosen profile.
Working around original detail
When a period room is being replastered, the detail dictates the job. Cornice and roses are protected and worked up to, not skimmed over. Where a ceiling is being overboarded, the boards stop short and the cornice is cut in cleanly, so you do not end up with a rose sitting in a shallow dish.
It takes longer than plastering an empty box of a room, and that is reflected honestly in the estimate rather than discovered halfway through.

Can painted-over cornice be brought back?
Usually, yes. Most detail that looks lost is still there under the paint, and once the build-up is cleared out of the undercuts the profile and its shadow lines come back. It is slow hand work rather than anything dramatic, and the result is normally far better than replacing it.
Can you match existing cornice in a room?
Where a section is missing we take the profile from the surviving original and run the new work to match it, so the repair is not obvious. Off-the-shelf profiles rarely match Victorian and Edwardian originals closely enough to sit next to them.
Is a ceiling rose purely decorative?
Originally it was practical as well — roses were often placed where a gas or oil fitting hung, and the moulding hid the staining. Today it is decorative, and it also gives a natural, honest place to take a pendant light in a high-ceilinged room.
Will replastering ruin my original cornice?
It should not, and on our jobs it does not. Detail is protected and worked up to rather than skimmed across. The damage people find afterwards usually comes from a ceiling being overboarded straight through the cornice line, which is quicker and irreversible.
Do you repair water-damaged plasterwork?
Yes, once the leak itself is fixed and the area has properly dried out. Repairing decorative plaster while it is still wet is wasted work — it will move again as it dries. We will tell you if something needs longer before we touch it.
Is decorative work more expensive than normal plastering?
Per square metre, yes, because it is hand work and it cannot be rushed. It is priced on what is actually there after we have looked at the room, not by a general rate, and the written estimate sets out what is being restored and what is being replaced.
