This is the bread-and-butter work: an existing house whose render has had enough. Cracked, hollow, patched a dozen times, painted a dozen more, and now dragging the whole property down. Re-rendering is the single change that lifts a house most, and on a period Southport semi the difference is dramatic.

It starts with what is underneath
Before we quote anything we go round the walls and tap them. Render that has lost its bond sounds hollow and drummy, and no top coat will stick to it however good the material is. Where it is failing, it comes off, back to brick or block, and we deal with what we find underneath.
That is not us making work. A beautiful finish over a blown, damp or contaminated substrate is money wasted, and it fails in a way that is far more expensive to put right the second time. If half the wall is sound we will tell you that too, and price the repair rather than the whole elevation.
Pebbledash, sand-and-cement and what replaces them
A huge amount of the housing stock round here is pebbledash or old sand-and-cement, and both have the same weakness: they are hard, brittle and effectively closed to vapour. When the wall behind them gets wet it cannot dry outwards, so it pushes the render off instead.
What replaces them depends on the property. Silicone thin-coat for a modern, low-maintenance through-colour finish. Monocouche where a one-coat through-colour render suits the build. Traditional materials where a solid, older wall genuinely needs to stay breathable. We will explain what we would use on your walls and why, in plain terms.
Beads, arrises and the details that show
The parts of a render job people actually notice up close are the edges: the line where render meets a window, the arris on a corner, the bellcast at the bottom of a wall, the return into a porch. Get those wrong and the whole elevation looks amateur no matter how flat the field is.
Every opening gets beaded and every corner gets a bead run true, checked against a level rather than an eye. Windows and doors are masked properly before anything is mixed. It is slower at set-out stage and it is the difference between a rendered house and a well-rendered house.
Repairs, patching and part elevations
Not everything needs the full treatment. Storm damage, a cracked section over a lintel, a patch where a satellite dish or old flue came out, a bellcast that has broken away — these are worth repairing properly rather than rendering a whole house.
Be aware that a patch on a painted or weathered wall will rarely be invisible; the surrounding render has aged. Where a seamless result matters, the honest answer is usually to redo a full elevation up to a natural break, and we will say so rather than take the smaller job and leave you disappointed.

Questions we get asked about external rendering
How do I know if my render needs replacing or just repairing?
Tap it. Render that has lost its bond sounds hollow and drummy rather than solid, and that area has to come off. If the hollow patches are isolated and the rest rings solid, a repair is sensible. If a whole elevation drums, replacing it is the only thing that lasts.
How long does a full re-render take?
Once scaffold is up, a typical three-bed semi runs about one to two weeks depending on how much old render has to come off, the weather window, and the system going on. Hacking off failed render is the part that most often adds days, so we assess that before quoting rather than after starting.
Do you have to take the old render off?
Only where it has failed. Sound, well-keyed render can often be overclad, which saves time and mess. Anything hollow, cracked through or lifting comes off — rendering over a failing coat means the new work fails with it, usually within a few winters.
Will rendering fix damp in my walls?
It fixes damp caused by wind-driven rain soaking into porous or failed masonry, which is common on exposed elevations here. It does not fix rising damp, a bridged damp course, a leaking gutter or condensation. We would rather find that at estimate stage than render over it.
Can you match render to next door on a semi?
We can get close on colour and texture, and we will always try, but an honest answer is that a neighbour's render has weathered and yours will be new. The join at the party line is the giveaway. Where both halves are being done at once the result is far better.
Do you clear up and take the waste away?
Yes. Hacked-off render makes a serious amount of debris, and it is sheeted, contained and taken away rather than left in a pile on your drive. The site gets swept down at the end of every day, not just at the end of the job.
