Dry Lining in Southport
Dry lining is boarding out walls and ceilings rather than wet-plastering them directly onto masonry. It is faster, it is drier, and on a cold solid wall an insulated board can make a genuine difference to how a room feels and what it costs to heat.
It is also where a lot of jobs quietly go wrong. Boards set out badly, joints landing in the wrong place, screws over-driven and dished, scrim skipped — all of it comes back through the finish weeks later as lines and cracks.
Setting out, fixing and taping
Boards are set out so joints land where they are least likely to move and never in a continuous line across a ceiling. Fixings are driven to just below the paper without breaking it — an over-driven screw has no grip and will pop through your paint in a year.
Every joint gets scrim taped and every internal and external angle gets the right bead. That is the bit in the photographs that looks like nothing and is the reason a ceiling stays crack-free through the first heating season.
Stud walls, boxing and openings
New stud walls get framed square, plumb and at proper centres, with noggins where anything is going to hang — a radiator, a TV, a basin, grab rails in a shower room. Deciding that before the boards go on costs nothing; deciding it afterwards means opening the wall back up.
The same applies to boxing in soil pipes and beams, and to recesses and niches. Set them out properly at frame stage, with the services already run, and the finished job looks deliberate instead of improvised.
Insulated linings on cold walls
On a solid-wall property with no cavity — which is most of the older stock in Southport and Birkdale — an insulated plasterboard lining is one of the few ways to warm a room up from the inside without external work.
It does need thinking through rather than just sticking board on. Reveals, sockets, skirtings and radiator pipework all move, and the wall behind needs to be dry and free of the damp problems that made it cold in the first place. We will tell you if we think a wall is not a candidate for it.

Questions we get asked about dry lining & plasterboarding
Is dry lining better than wet plastering?
Neither is better outright, they suit different situations. Dry lining is quicker, drier and lets you add insulation or run services in the void. Wet plaster onto sound masonry gives a solid wall that takes fixings anywhere and is better for sound. Most houses end up with both.
Will the joints crack later?
Not if the boards are set out sensibly, fixed correctly and every joint is scrim taped before skimming. Cracks along a straight line usually mean joints were taped badly or not at all, or that boards were fixed to timber that was still wet and has since moved.
Can I hang a TV or radiator on a stud wall?
Yes, provided there is timber behind it. Tell us before the boards go on and we will put noggins exactly where you need them. Retrofitting a fixing into a boarded wall means either finding a stud in the wrong place or opening it up again.
Do you insulate as well as board?
We fit insulated plasterboard linings on cold solid walls, which is the usual approach where there is no cavity. The wall has to be dry first — lining a wall that is damp traps the problem behind the board rather than curing it.
What board goes in a bathroom or shower?
Moisture-resistant board as a minimum, and a proper tile backer board in the wet zone of a shower. Standard plasterboard behind tiles in a shower will eventually soften, and by the time it shows, the tiles are coming off with it.
Do you skim the boards as well?
Yes — most of our dry lining is boarded and skimmed as one job, so there is only one trade to deal with and no argument about whose responsibility a poor finish is. We can also board only, taped and ready for someone else to finish.
